Today I'm...

Working on...the doily.

Not very hard though. Mostly I'm just sitting in front of the computer wasting time. I have to make myself get up or I will get nothing accomplished. Where does the time go when you sit at the computer? It's like you get sucked into a giant black hole and time disappears and has no meaning.

Reading...the Richard Burton Diaries.
Sometimes interesting, sometimes not.

Eating...these are SO GOOD!

Feeling...neutral.

1.  At around midnight last night I stood in the dark with just the light of the refrigerator to see. I was refilling my water cup with ice. I got a big scoop of ice, and there was a big lump of finely-crushed ice on the end. Do you know where this is going? LOL. I love finely-crushed ice. So I stuck the end of the ice scooper to my lips to get the crushed iced in my mouth, and the scooper immediately and painfully froze to my bottom lip. "Shitshitshitshitshit! Getitoffgetitoffgetitoff!" I said in my head while dancing around hoping it would hurry up and fall off. After it finally did come off, my bottom lip was instantly throbbing. I stood there laughing in the dark all by myself. How could I have not learned that lesson in 53 years? My lip still hurts.

2.  It's very HOT and 69% humidity outside at this very moment. Gross.

3.  I'm going to learn to tat. Next time I go to H.L., I'm buying a couple of shuttles. I watched a few video lessons on YouTube, and it looks easy enough, albeit a little fiddly because everything is so small. I'm sure it's not as easy as it looks until you get the hang of it. It's got to be better than knitting, which I hate by the way. I've finally decided that it's just a fact. I can do it, but I just don't like to. Simple as that.

5. I would like to go to New York City one day and see the 9/11 Memorial and stand on Ground Zero. I hope I can do it without crying (sobbing even), but I don't think I could. I'd prefer to go alone, too, I think.

6. My daddy has severe food allergies. He is allergic to oatmeal, raisins, grapes, and walnuts. Kinda weird. I am only allergic to penicillin.

7. You know those crochet covered rocks? I saw one on Etsy for $60. It wasn't even big! It made me laugh because it was so ridiculous. She will probably sell it tomorrow and email me saying, "Now who's ridiculous, bitch?" LOL.

8. I'm gonna go take a nap with my dogs. See ya.

The Doily is Blue

But Buddha is Happy!
I brought him into my dining room for a change of scenery.


I made the small blue doily on Wednesday evening.

I used #10 R.H. thread in Delft Blue and White

The white one I started last night using another pattern, but it's going to be a big 'un when it's finished.




It's another cloudy day. We've had a lot of those lately, but there's not nearly enough rain coming out of those clouds and we are still under drought conditions with restricted water use.

More Food - Ugh!

I know I've had a lot of food posts lately, but I've been spending a lot of time collecting and trying recipes. I'm sharing the ones worth sharing...okay, and a few (strawberry pie) that aren't.

Here are a few more I've tried...

All of the ingredients for...
ONE POT WONDER.


You really do just throw all of those ingredients (except the basil and parmesan) into a big stock pot and cook for 10-11 minutes, let it sit for another five or so, and it's done. We liked it and I will make it again. It wasn't good left over...the linguine got mushy. The recipe: One Pot Wonder Tomato Basil Pasta


And something a little different...




Avocado Pasta
It was different but so delicious!
I used 3 avocados, because they are small here in Texas, and three cloves of garlic, and I added a tsp of red pepper flakes, but everything else was the same. Recipe: Avocado Pasta


And one more that the Captain REALLY loved...

Sorry, I must have inadvertently deleted my picture. I made it last weekend. The only change I made was I used Ore Ida Potatoes O'Brien instead of just plain frozen potatoes. The trick to this recipe is browning your hamburger meat really, really, really brown, and once you put the potatoes in the hot oil in your pan, don't stir for a good while so that they get really, really, really brown too. Get the potatoes BROWN! I cannot stress that enough. It makes all the difference in how it tastes. Recipe: Hamburger Hash

Eli and Pie

Strawberry Honey Pie
*I've looked EVERYWHERE, and I can't figure out where I got this recipe.
But it was within the last few days.

Fresh strawberries mashed up with honey and gently heated.

A slurry of cornstarch and water messed up the color for me.

I baked the pie shell, cooled it, and added the cream cheese and honey mixture.

Then I started layering the fresh strawberries.
I cut mine in half, but the recipe said to leave them whole.

Lookin' good!

I was excited because it was going to be so pretty once I added the mashed strawberries, let it cool, and added whipped cream to the top when serving.

BUT BIG BUMMER...

It turned out to be the ugliest pie EVER!
I was so disappointed!
How could something that started so beautiful go so wrong?

The good news is it still tasted good.
But I'm glad I wasn't having company or taking it anywhere.

I'm No Quitter

But I quit!

I do not like this doily. I don't like the colors I picked together. I don't like the size. I HATE this stupid stitch I'm doing in the blue. I'm positive it should be TRs instead of DCs contrary to what the chart says, and it's making it curl up all the way around. It's time to say goodbye before you even say hello, stupid doily. I'm throwing in the towel on you. I have better things to waste my time on...a whole list of them!


Like my lovely blue blanket that makes me smile and make heart shapes out of yarn, and do math, and tie yarn samples to cardboard, and stack my squares according to color, and then stacking them again staggering the colors, and then putting them in a big circle, and stroking them to feel how soft they are, and generally being a bit psycho about it all. That's the way it's supposed to be.

Mmm...avocado!

I made the Avocado Hummus again yesterday.
We can't get enough.

And I picked a rose off one of my bushes.

So tiny and perfect.

And I picked some basil too.
It's for a recipe I'll share on another post.
I hope it's as easy and yummy as it looks.

But I have a different recipe for you today.
We needed race food yesterday so...
Bacon BBQ Sliders it was.

Bacon and onion browning.
Anything that starts like this has to be good, right?


All ingredients, including the browned bacon and onion, combined and pressed into a 9 x 9 pan. (I halved the recipe.)


Slather with BBQ sauce...

And bake.

When it's done, cut it into squares and serve on small buns with a slice of cheese.

They were good.

On the Crochet Front...

Still workin' on the squares and the doily.
Nine more squares to go.

I sat down and worked out a plan for this blanket last night. It involved math and only took me AN HOUR. I swear. And there are only 20 blocks! I'm a math idiot. My mind goes blank when I see numbers. I'm embarrassed to tell you about it, but it's too funny not to. 

Do you know what took me AN HOUR?  I drew...I scribbled...I erased...I wrote down numbers...I erased some more...I drew the blanket with all the squares...I labled the squares with colors...I erased some more...rinse, repeat.  

Twenty blocks, five colors = four of each color.  OH MY GOD! DUH! For some reason I was thinking there would be more of some colors the way I was placing them. And that reason is I'm a huge dumb-ass where math is concerned. Now you know.

Something kind of interesting about this one...

It's a Portulacaria afra Variegata, or Rainbow Elephant Bush, a form of the South African Elephant Bush, a major food source of the native elephant population. Elephant food! And you thought they only ate peanuts. Oh, wait. That was me.

I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed all the succulents I potted this year.
I moved more of them into my kitchen so I could enjoy them.
It's already too hot outside to sit out there.



I'll save the rest of my nonsense for another day.
