Just Messin' Around

I had fun making these coasters all afternoon on Sunday. I made these while I watched episode after episode of the X-Files. I never watched it when it was actually on TV back in the 1990s. I got a kick out of seeing the antiquated technology that was probably cutting-edge when the show was aired -- cell phones with big ol' antennas and fat, cube-like TVs. And I was surprised that in one episode they showed a small, hand-carried computer that looked an awful lot like an iPad. Really? Back in 1993 (which is when that episode aired for the first time -- I checked), there wasn't such a thing, and they probably all thought it was so futuristic and would never really be. Here we are 20-some-odd years later, and it's real.

Anyway, I got off-track there, didn't I? The coasters...here's the info on them:

Yarn:  Hobby Lobby's I Love This Cotton (I've misplaced the label so not sure of the color name), and the slip-stitch circles were mostly Peaches & Cream yarn in various colors.
Hook:  Size G

Other than that, I've just been goofing around.  Oh, and also making another doily which I'll be finishing tonight. I'm on the last round. I'm on a doily kick again, as you can tell. I even ordered a box full of new thread colors the other day from JoAnn online. Can't wait to get them.

Willow Square from the 200 Square Blocks book.

And some flowers in yarn and thread.

Yep, just messin' around when I have time.
I've had quite a bit of work so there's always that.

I've made a special dessert today that I'll show you with the doily tomorrow. I haven't taken any pictures yet, but it's kind of spectacular-looking, if I do say so myself.  See you then!

Okay, one more picture if you insist...

I love these!

Kabobs, Bread, and Bologna

The Cap grilled these steak kabobs out on the grill last night for dinner.
Really, really, really good!
We have plenty of leftovers for another two meals each.

I made this bread this afternoon.
Oh my!

I took these pictures when it was still hot, so the chocolate chips were melty and kind of took over the picture, but you get the idea. The pictures would look much better if I had let it cool first.  This is SO GOOD!

I can't find the recipe I used on Pinterest now or I'd just copy and paste it here, but here is a link to a similar recipe.  The recipe I used only had 2 1/2 cups of flour and called for butter instead of shortening:  Banana Split Bread

I know you are shocked because I am so refined in every other way (ha), but I love bologna!  This jalapeno bologna is out right now and I'm loving it.  I grew up eating bologna and still love it.  I'll eat it any old way you want to fix it on a sandwich -- plain, mustard, mayo, Fritos smashed into the bread, fried, whatever.

That's all I've got.  See ya.

The Forever Potholder

Potholder Made With Thread
Double-Thick (2 sides made, only one embroidered)

It took FOREVER.
At least 12 hours by my rough calculations.

Thread:  Aunt Lydia's #10 Cotton
Hook:  Size 1.65 mm
Embroidery:  Triple strand of Aunt Lydia's thread

I've been sitting here about 15 minutes just staring at the screen. I guess I've got nothin' to say!  See ya.

Repurposing Gloves and Rain

I found this cute idea and instructions on Mrs. Brown Makes blog yesterday and HAD to make these.

I got a few pairs of knee socks at Target.
(Actually, the Captain got them for me while he was out.)
The idea is to use old ones you already have and repurpose them, but I didn't have any suitable.
Cut the feet off as shown above.

Mine were raggety and unraveling after I cut them so I folded the cut end to the inside about 3/4 inch.

Now the ends are nice and smooth to crochet into.
The hem will be sewn down with your blanket stitch.

Use a contrasting color and sew a blanket stitch all the way around.
See this YouTube tutorial for the blanket stitch if you don't know how:
It's easy!

I used DK-weight yarn (Stylecraft DK)
But you could use sport-weight or baby-weight.

Crochet a row of sc (2 sc in each blanket stitch) in the same color.
Fasten off red.
Use whatever color(s) you want.
I used a size F hook.

Attach gray yarn in any sc, ch 3, dc in each sc around; join.
(I used Knit Picks Brava Sport in gray)
Fasten off gray yarn.

Attach red yarn again in any dc stitch, ch 1, sc in same stitch.
*Crochet 1 sc in each of first two DCs, then (sc, picot, sc) all in next DC*.
Repeat from * to * around; join and fasten off.
Weave in ends.

I needed a cute hand model, but I didn't have one.

Wasn't that fun? It was for me!
Thank you, Mrs. Brown.

While I'm being all green and repurposing stuff...

Check out our new rain barrel.

The gutter on the eaves of the house drains down into the 65-gallon barrel so we can reuse it for the plants, lawn, etc.
Pretty cool, eh?

Fletch and A Tease

Saturday evening...

Don't bug me. I'm tired.

Seriously. Don't stick that camera in my...

Sigh.

Fletch, there are snacks in the kitchen!

Fletch?

I mixed up some "Hippie Juice."
It's in the fridge getting ice-cold.

Good-lookin' strawberries, huh?
It's getting to be that time of year.

I have a sah-weet post all ready for you tomorrow.
You're going to want to make this cute crochet-make!
I had a ball making it today.
You will too!

Random

Warning:  Some bitchin' and moanin' included. Okay, a lot.

1.  The roofers were here the last couple of days. They're done, thank goodness. We still have a couple of windows to be replaced, and then we're having the house painted. I hate having workmen around the house. They make me nervous being outside around the house. AND I can't wear my pajama pants or go bra-less while they're here.  Hmpf!

2.  I fired the lawn company yesterday in a big ol' snit, but they deserved it. The Captain had already trimmed the hedges out front a couple of weekends ago, and they came yesterday and were trimming them. There was nothing to trim, but they were cutting ONE INCH off the top. I swear. I'm not exaggerating. And the lawn had not grown one centimeter since they mowed last week because it's been so cool, but there they were mowing and edging. We'll be charged $120 for the trimming and $30 for the mowing and edging. OH HELL NO. I'm constantly having to manage those guys, and I have to listen to the Captain bitch about them. So I called the owner and cancelled any future service. Cap is always saying he'll do it himself anyway, so now I don't have to hear it.

3.  I went to bed yesterday at 2:30 in the afternoon yesterday and didn't get up until 8:00 last night. Then I slept nine hours last night too! Stress management.

4.  That Nordic Shawl has become my nemesis. It only needs four rows to finish, but all I can manage to do is scowl at it from across the room. It's hanging on the back of my pantry door, so I see it all day every day, but that doesn't do anything to nudge me into finishing it. I don't know what the deal is, but I'll do it in my own good time.

5.  I'm really enjoying the thread crochet right now. It's easier on the arms. I'll probably make another doily or maybe that thread potholder with the embroidery star thingies around the edges. Should be interesting because you crochet it with the thread doubled. I've never done that before with thread.

6.  I need to force myself to take a walk today. It's beautiful outside, and it would do me good to get out in the fresh air and get a little exercise.

7.  I read this book (non-fiction) a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it. My sister brought it to me.

8.  I haven't picked up the knitting since the last time I talked about it. Too much going on to concentrate that much. I did buy a Knit Simple magazine and marked a couple of easy little things to make. We'll see. I'm out of the mood for it right now.

9.  I'm too scared to weigh myself right now, but all my pants are too tight. I refuse to go on a diet this year. Screw it. Maybe I'll see how fat I can get instead. (I'm kidding about that last part)

10.  HAPPY FRIDAY!

Pretty Little Pinafore

Bodice closure.

I tested a baby dress pattern for Olga at Lacy Crochet recently. Isn't it cute?  You can find the pattern in her Etsy Shop HERE.  I used Bernat Softee Baby yarn and a 4mm hook.  I made the little headband to go with it, but I didn't use a pattern.  The headband pattern does not come with the dress pattern.

I've said it 100 times, but I'll say it again. I love making baby dresses!

********************************

This is what I've been hearing since 7:00 a.m...

BANG!  BANG-BANG!  BANG-BANG-BANG!
BANG!

We're getting a new roof today.
I will be insane by 9:00 a.m.
