The Captain snapped this blurry picture last night.  Not his fault.  The camera was focusing on the pole instead of the bird…DAMMIT.  I’m not sure exactly what it is.  I’ve never seen a Cardinal that only has a bright red head.  I will have to refer to my bird book.  The male Cardinal I’ve seen that is nesting in our bush is almost all red with a black mask.

I made Sandy’s Easy Lemon Cake yesterday afternoon.  Two thumbs up…even from The Captain who only likes chocolate 99% of the time.  He ate two pieces.  Thanks, Sandy!

Hey, I forgot Monday is a Holiday!  Yipee.  No work.  (As you can see, I’m working diligently right now.  Ha-ha.)  Better run.

Momma Cardinal

She sat in that tiny spot of shade for a long time.  I kept watching to see if she’d get in the sun so I could get a more colorful picture of her, but nope.

Daddy Cardinal is elusive.  I haven’t been able to get a picture of him, but I see him out there all the time.  He must be more skittish than the rest of them.  He flies off anytime he sees me through the window.

Momma Cardinal, a sparrow (in front with his mouth open…they’re bitchy little birds), and I think a finch of some type in-flight.

Who needs a manikin head for her hats?  I do.  I ordered one today.  Lamps and candle holders just ain’t cuttin’ it for etsy pictures.  I have to appear to be professional.  Hee-hee.

Y’all get busy out there and show me some crochetin’.  Am I the only one with hot hooks around here?  Stop draggin’ your asses and get out some yarn and a hook.  I can’t stay inspired for too long without some help.

I could just put up bird pictures all summer, but y’all wouldn’t like that so much after awhile.

 

Birds & THE Trial

This is a hanging fake plant on my back porch.  We’ve discovered pair of gray doves nesting inside there this year.  One of them is constantly in there sitting on the eggs.  I haven’t gotten a good look at the eggs yet since one of the doves is always sitting on them.  I tried to get some pictures of the dove this morning…

This was the best I could do.  Can you see the dove?  I’m going to try and rig up a ladder near there to see if I can get some better pictures.  (OMG, Pammy Sue is getting out the ladder!  Call the EMS NOW!  Ha-ha.)  I will be careful and try not to break a hip.  I’m also being careful not to get too close and upset them.  I’d hate it if I caused them to abandoned their next and eggs.  That picture was taken with a zoom lens and so will the rest.  Wish me luck.  I hope to get some good pictures, especially when the babies hatch.  Won’t that be fun?

There are also a pair of Cardinals nesting in one of the shrubs in the backyard.  We can see them coming and going constantly.  It’s impossible to see anything going on inside there, and I don’t want to stick my head in there and disturb them.  But…

The Captain put up this birdfeeder a couple of days ago.  I’ve seen the Cardinals in the grass and up on the porch since then.  I’ve tried to get a good picture of them with no success yet.  But I will!

Are y’all watching the Casey Anthony Trial on HLN?  I’ve been watching it since it started.  I can’t stop watching.  A lot of it is boring and slow, but the good parts are worth the wait to me.  I have the trial coverage on all day, and then they go into FOUR HOURS of shows that recap it and talk to “experts,” etc.  Let’s see, there’s Jane Valez-Mitchell’s show, then Nancy Grace, then Dr. Drew, and then Joy Behar’s show.  I’ve had way too much by that point (10PM), but I can’t stop watching.

Crochet Ascot

 

I bought this pattern on etsy Saturday.  I thought it would be something that would sell well.  We’ll see.  I think it’s really cute.  I’m going to make more colors this week.  The author of the pattern is also selling them (she’s in Australia).  I hated to undercut her too bad so I put the same price as she had only with free shipping.  She says you can sell anything you make with her pattern as long as you give her credit.  She didn’t mention pricing, but I thought it would be rude to undercut her price.

I used Caron Country yarn that I had in my stash.  I went to buy more because it crocheted up so nice for this pattern, and Hobby Lobby has quit carrying it!  Of course!  They’ve had it for years, and now that I want to buy it, it’s gone.  Anywho…so I bought some Caron SS in three other colors.  Hopefully it will look and feel as nice as the other did.  That stuff splits on my sometimes though.  I may regret that. 

Jeez…could I rattle on a little longer about nothing?  Heh-heh.  Crochet, crochet, blah, blah, blah…

I think I have ANOTHER ear infection.  WTF?  I’ve never had ear infections in my life like I’ve had the past two years.  What gives?  I need tubes like I’m 3 years old!  I swear I blew something out in my ears when I blew out my vocal cords and grew giant tumors a couple of years ago.  Dr. Pammy Sue’s diagnosis is that I blew out my Eustachian tubes and they aren’t draining properly.  With the Internet, we can be smarter than those damn doctors sometimes…and CHEAPER!

I made these last night from a free pattern on Ravelry that I heavily modified (Victorian Mitts is the pattern name I think).  Yarn is Wool of the Andes from Knit Picks in Hyacinth and Caron Spa for the trim.  They’re going in the shop.

Speaking of the shop, I had my first sale yesterday.  I was ridiculously excited.

Rainbow Baby Blanket

Pattern:  Double DC-Stitch Pattern from my grandmother’s old crochet things.  (Basic pattern is:  Ch as many as you need to get the width you want (I think I started with 92), sk first 5 sts, 2 dc in each of next two stitches, sk 2 sts, repeat.  End each row with sk 2 st, 1 dc in last st, ch 3, turn.)

Yarn:  Plymouth Yarn, Encore Colorspun & H.L. ILTY for Yellow Part of Border  (Loved this yarn and will buy it again in other colors.)

Hook:  K

U.K. Soldier Killed in Afghanistan Leaves Friends $160G for Las Vegas Party

YORK, England –  A British soldier killed by a Taliban bomb in Afghanistan left $161,500 in his will -- so his friends could go on vacation to Las Vegas, The Sun reported Monday.

Royal Marine David Hart, who had taken out a $403,800 life insurance policy before he was deployed to Afghanistan, stipulated in a letter that in the event of his death, his friends and their partners should travel to Sin City for a massive party in his memory.

"In his letter David said he had had a great life and had no regrets about anything. He always said he would do something like this if something bad happened," friend Andy Hare said. "He said, 'Go and have a good time and spend all this money.'"

Now, one year after 23-year-old Hart's death, 32 friends will fly to Nevada to honor his final wishes.

Hart, a combat medic, also set aside money for his family as well as $80,700 for a charity for wounded Marines.

Cool story aside, I just don’t know how these families and mothers survive losing a son like that (or any other way).  They are all so young.  We definitely owe so many people a debt of gratitude.  Our government here in the U.S. really does not take care of these families and wounded soldiers and their families as well as they should.  It’s disgraceful.
